Is it another version of the Sydney monorail?
No, Sky Way is not a monorail.
The differences between Sky Way and a Monorail are as follows:
- Sky Way can travel up to speeds of 150kph whereas the Monorails we have seen in Australia have essentially been low capacity ‘theme park’ designs that have operated at quite low speeds, less than 80 kph;
- Sky Way has a track of two rails and a Monorail is based on a large single straddle-beam to carry the rolling stock;
- Sky Way’s supporting structure is sleek and unobtrusive compared to the Monorail’s more bulky structure; and
- Sky Way costs much less to build than a Monorail system.
The main similarities of Sky Way and Monorail are that they are built on an elevated tracks independent of other systems, they don’t congest traffic, don’t flood and are safe.
Why isn’t there a Sky Way in operation?
For rail in Australia today we are still using technology that fundamentally hasn’t changed from when it was first invested in the 1830s (i.e. steel on steel generally installed on sleepers laid at grade).
In part, there hasn’t been a revolution because existing technologies have been able to evolve. The bigger barrier has been due to economics as some new rail technologies such as pressurised capsules and magnetic levitation are much more costly to build than traditional rail.
Sky Way is now in its fourth-generation and incorporates numerous key technological advances in construction, automation and propulsion, improving its economic viability. The economic viability of Sky Way has attracted significant interest and financial backing enabling a prototype facility to be built in Eastern Europe, which is due for completion in 2017.
Will it be safe?
Safety has been at the forefront of designers mind when developing Sky Way. Safety has driven technological advances in automation including systems that control train movements, detect obstacles, monitor platforms and structures for security and emergency situations.
A major advantage of Sky Way over cars, buses, trucks, trains and trams is that it is separated from and does not intersect with other vehicles, and therefore no possibility of collisions on the road network.
Will it be reliable?
Sky Way systems will provide positioning data, along with train speeds, with the highest accuracy. This will allow accurate scheduling with regard to train arrivals and departures at stops. This in-turn will enable clients to improve capacity through tighter scheduling and more predictable running times.
Further, as the modules are driverless, services can rotate on the network as frequently as the number of rolling stock installed within the system, meaning scheduling of infrequent services on the network will no longer be applicable.
Why Sky Way over competitor products in operation?
A key benefit of Sky Way is its operational and maintenance costs, which are significantly lower than costs associated with conventional rail, both heavy and light.
Sky Way structure and advanced technology also allows Australia to consider mass transit (urban or high-speed) and mass freight in areas traditionally thought of too sensitive or challenging, in both urban and natural environments.
Where will the components be made?
The components of the structure will be made and assembled in Australia. Steel and aluminum which will form the core strength of the structures will be sourced from Australia. Components for the rolling stock will be sourced from both national and international suppliers, but will be assembled in Australia.
Who will build it?
Sky Way Australia will partner with notable and experienced builders in the transport industry to build Sky Way across Australia.
How many jobs will it create?
Sky Way will create hundreds of new jobs to establish and roll-out its operations in Australia. The number of jobs will be dependent on orders received.
Why is Sky Way cheaper than alternative rail systems?
Because Sky Way is installed overhead land costs are significantly lower and on-ground congestion is avoided.
ky Way also requires less steel per kilometre in comparison with a speedy monorail and / or magnetic levitation train.
Land acquisition is minimised and excavation volumes are reduced in comparison with railways.
